Apple signs 15-year renewable deal in Italy

Engie and Apple sign a renewable energy agreement in Italy. Engie will develop 173 MW of solar and wind capacity in southern Italy, with Apple receiving 80% of the output. This project supports Apple’s sustainability goals….

Engie has announced a 15-year renewable Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Apple, facilitating the development of new solar and wind projects in Italy. The agreement involves the creation of 173 MW of new capacity in southern Italy, including two wind farms, a wind repowering project, and two agrivoltaic plants. These projects are expected to become operational between 2026 and 2027.

The facilities are projected to generate over 400 GW-hours of electricity annually, with Apple set to receive 80% of this output. The remainder will be supplied to the national grid. Engie’s Executive Vice President in charge of GBU Supply and Energy Management, Edouard Neviaski, stated, “This agreement with Apple demonstrates Engie’s ambition to lead the energy transition by delivering innovative solutions with diverse technologies. Through strategic partnerships like this one, we are accelerating the shift toward a carbon-neutral future, accompanying our clients in their sustainability journey.”

Engie claims the project could meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 30,000 households and prevent the emission of more than 160,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, akin to removing nearly 70,000 conventional cars from the road.

This announcement is the latest in a series of renewable energy deals for Apple, including several clean energy agreements recently announced in Europe, amounting to 650 MW of solar and wind capacity. These initiatives are part of Apple’s ongoing efforts to match the electricity consumption of its products with renewable energy sources.
