Verdalia Bioenergy secures €671 million to expand biomethane projects. The funding will bolster the development of biomethane plants in Spain and Italy, enhancing energy transition efforts by leveraging renewable natural gas to decarbonise sectors where wind and solar are less feasible….

Verdalia Bioenergy has successfully closed a €671 million corporate financing deal, aimed at advancing its portfolio of biomethane projects across Spain and Italy. Biomethane, or renewable natural gas (RNG), is anticipated to be pivotal in transitioning to cleaner energy sources, particularly in sectors where wind or solar energy solutions are less viable. Derived from organic waste such as agricultural, industrial, and household refuse, biomethane mirrors the chemical properties of fossil-based natural gas. This enables it to facilitate the decarbonisation of challenging sectors like road transport and heavy industry without necessitating changes to existing transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Founded in 2023 by Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Funds alongside Co-CEOs Fernando Bergasa and Cristina Avila, Verdalia aims to become a leading biomethane operator. The company focuses on developing, acquiring, building, and operating biomethane plants, initially in Spain, with plans to expand across Europe. According to Verdalia, this transaction represents one of the largest financings in the European biomethane sector.

Matteo Botto Poala, Managing Director of Infrastructure at Goldman Sachs Alternatives and a board member of Verdalia, remarked, “We are proud to support Verdalia in this landmark transaction. This financing validates the ability to attract infrastructure capital into the biomethane sector and highlights the scalability and resilience of biomethane as a core pillar of Europe’s energy transition.”

The newly secured financing will enable Verdalia to construct and operate projects in Spain and Italy, with a combined production capacity exceeding 3 TWh per year, enough to meet the annual energy needs of nearly one million households. In Italy, the company currently operates seven plants, with six more under construction, expected to commence biomethane grid injections in early 2026. In Spain, Verdalia is building its first plant and plans to begin constructing two additional facilities by year-end. The total capital investment in this portfolio is projected to surpass €1 billion.

Verdalia intends to pursue both greenfield and brownfield growth, utilising the financing for building new biomethane plants and acquisitions. Fernando Bergasa, Co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Verdalia Bioenergy, stated, “This milestone constitutes a big leap forward for Verdalia and for the biomethane industry in Europe. It demonstrates the trust of top-tier financial institutions in our strategy and underlines the role that renewable natural gas will play in achieving decarbonisation targets and energy independence.”
