OpenAI has announced its decision to establish a permanent London headquarters in King’s Cross, securing an 88,500 square foot space in the Regent Quarter. This move comes shortly after the company decided to abandon a significant data centre project in the northeast. The new office is expected to accommodate 544 employees, more than doubling its current workforce in the capital, which includes around 30 researchers. OpenAI aims to make London its largest research hub outside the United States.
The decision to expand in London occurs at a politically sensitive time. Last week, OpenAI shelved its Stargate data centre plans for Cobalt Park in North Tyneside, citing high energy costs and uncertainties about UK copyright law. This project was seen as a key component of efforts to enhance Britain’s sovereign computing capacity.
OpenAI’s expansion is part of a broader trend, with rival Anthropic also exploring growth in London. The UK government has announced £40 million in funding for a new AI research laboratory, reinforcing Britain’s position in fundamental AI research.
Phoebe Thacker, OpenAI’s global head of data research programmes and London site lead, cited the depth of British talent and the increasing adoption of AI tools in UK businesses and institutions as primary reasons for the investment. The UK’s technology sector continues to attract global attention, demonstrating the enduring appeal of its talent pool despite challenges in infrastructure development.
