Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has entered into significant clean energy agreements with energy infrastructure provider NextEra Energy. The social media giant has committed to purchasing approximately 2.3 gigawatts (GW) of solar power and over 165 megawatts (MW) of energy storage from new projects across the United States.
The contracts include power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 2.1 GW of energy from nine solar projects in Texas’ ERCOT, the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) markets. Additionally, agreements with New Mexico’s PNM market will include 190 MW of solar PPAs and 168 MW of battery storage. These projects are scheduled to come online between 2026 and 2028 and are expected to create up to 2,440 construction jobs, according to NextEra.

These agreements are part of a series of large-scale clean energy deals for Meta, which include a recent deal with Engie for 100% of the energy from a new $900 million solar project in Texas and nearly 800 MW of agreements announced in June from new wind and solar projects in Ohio, Arkansas, and Texas.
Meta aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2030. The company met its goal to fulfil 100% of its operational energy needs with renewable sources in 2020 and anticipates adding 9.8 GW of renewable energy to local grids in the U.S. by the end of 2025.
