Innovate UK launches £1m AI prize competition

Innovate UK launches a £1 million competition for AI breakthroughs. The Agentic AI Pioneers Prize supports AI systems with initiative and collaboration capabilities, aiming to enhance productivity across manufacturing, health, and creative industries, with up to four winners sharing the prize fund.

Innovate UK has announced a £1 million competition designed to accelerate advancements in agentic artificial intelligence (AI) within three of the UK’s fastest-growing sectors: advanced manufacturing, health and life sciences, and the creative industries. The Agentic AI Pioneers Prize seeks to support AI systems that can independently take initiative, collaborate with humans, generate new ideas, and manage complex tasks—abilities set to transform productivity and innovation across various industries.

Agentic AI distinguishes itself from traditional AI models by operating autonomously within set boundaries, automating workflows, and improving decision-making. Its potential applications are diverse, ranging from speeding up drug discovery and optimising manufacturing processes to advancing generative design in creative fields.

The competition is open to UK-registered businesses of all sizes, with up to four winners sharing the £1 million prize fund. Each sector winner will receive £250,000, and an additional £250,000 will be awarded to the most outstanding solution across all categories. Prize categories include Advanced Manufacturing, Health & Life Sciences, Creative Industries, and Best Overall Solution. Winners will also receive expert mentoring from the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, Digital Catapult, and leading AI specialists in their respective fields. Participants will gain national exposure and strategic networking opportunities.

Tom Adeyoola, Chief Executive Officer of Innovate UK, stated that the prize reflects the organisation’s goal to drive high-impact innovation and expand commercial outcomes. “Innovate UK’s vision is for a UK where breakthrough ideas become industry giants. This means being bolder in our aspirations and more targeted in our approach. The Pioneers Prize embodies that mission by removing barriers, providing clear routes to scale, and backing businesses ready to lead rather than follow.”

This initiative aims to position the UK as a global leader in AI-driven design, research and development optimisation, and automation, especially as businesses face increasing demands to improve productivity and accelerate time-to-market.

Key dates for the competition include the closing date for expressions of interest on Wednesday, 19th November, and an online briefing event on Thursday, 23rd October. Applications can be submitted via the Innovate UK website. This competition provides SMEs, scale-ups, and larger enterprises with an opportunity to gain national recognition, form strategic partnerships, and showcase agentic AI solutions with measurable impact.
