Seaspan’s subsidiary, Seaspan Energy, and climate solutions provider Anew Climate have announced a strategic partnership to supply renewable liquefied natural gas (R-LNG) to shipowners along the North American West Coast. This initiative aims to offer a sustainable fuel alternative, aligning with international efforts to reduce emissions in the maritime industry.

Renewable natural gas (RNG), also known as biomethane, is derived from organic waste such as agricultural, industrial, and household waste. It is chemically identical to conventional natural gas, allowing it to be integrated into existing infrastructure. This supports decarbonisation efforts in challenging sectors like road transport and heavy industry.

Anew Climate will provide RNG certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) and assist Seaspan with pre-audit services for ISCC certification. The fuel will comply with standards set by frameworks such as the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Net Zero Framework and the EU’s FuelEU Maritime Regulation.

The partnership is in line with IMO’s emerging guidance encouraging emissions reductions through alternative fuels. Anew Climate and Seaspan aim to explore commercial opportunities to promote certified lower-carbon fuels in the maritime sector.

Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy, expressed pride in collaborating with Anew Climate, highlighting the partnership’s role in supporting cleaner energy solutions and innovation in the maritime industry.

Founded in 2001 and majority-owned by TPG Rise, Anew Climate offers solutions to help companies reduce their carbon footprints through technological and nature-based methods. It is one of the largest independent RNG marketers worldwide, assisting producers in bringing RNG to market and securing supply for buyers through offtake agreements.

Andy Brosnan, President of Anew Climate Low Carbon Fuels, noted the significance of the partnership in advancing sustainable solutions in global shipping, combining Anew’s RNG expertise with Seaspan’s marine logistics capabilities to help shipowners meet emissions requirements without compromising performance.
