Trane unveils AI lab for energy solutions

Trane Technologies launches BrainBox AI Lab for energy management. The new lab will focus on AI and HVAC advancements to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability, aiming to set new industry standards and drive digital transformation in building systems….

Trane Technologies, a leader in HVAC and climate control solutions, has announced the launch of the BrainBox AI Lab. This new initiative is designed to advance artificial intelligence (AI) and HVAC technologies, with the goal of improving energy management and sustainability in buildings.

The initiative follows Trane’s acquisition of BrainBox AI last year. BrainBox AI is known for its AI and cloud-based building systems optimisation tool, which helps building owners accelerate decarbonisation and reduce energy consumption.

According to Trane, the BrainBox AI Lab will act as a hub for research, collaboration, and real-world testing. The lab aims to set new standards by advancing autonomous control systems, predictive models, and algorithms. These efforts are intended to reduce emissions through smarter energy usage. The lab will also focus on emerging fields such as agentic AI and the application of physics-informed neural networks, which are expected to drive digital transformation in the built environment.

Jean-Simon Venne, President of BrainBox AI and Head of the AI Lab, stated, “AI is accelerating at a pace few could have imagined, unlocking extraordinary opportunities to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges. Our responsibility is not just to innovate quickly, but to also ensure that it is being done wisely and sustainably. The BrainBox AI Lab will define what is next for AI within the industry.”

Trane has indicated that the initiative will involve a multidisciplinary team of experts, including software engineers, data scientists, AI researchers, machine learning developers, and AI engineers. The lab will focus on transforming ideas and discoveries into practical products and applications. It will collaborate with researchers and universities on scientific discovery and the future of AI in energy management. Additionally, the lab will embed ethical and responsible AI principles into the design, development, and deployment of its solutions, aiming to create AI technologies that support energy optimisation and the reduction of global carbon emissions.

Riaz Raihan, Chief Digital Officer at Trane Technologies, commented, “Demand continues to grow for solutions that reduce energy, emissions and operational costs. This premier lab is an important element in our strategy to remain at the forefront of digital and AI solutions that create positive impact for our customers and the world.”
