AWS inks renewable energy deal with Gentari

AWS and Gentari sign agreement for new wind project. The collaboration will support an 80 MW wind power initiative in Tamil Nadu, India, anticipated to generate 300,000 MWh annually, aiding AWS’s renewable energy goals….

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Malaysian clean energy solutions provider Gentari have announced a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to support a new 80 MW wind power project in Tamil Nadu, India. The project is expected to commence operations in mid-2027, generating approximately 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually.

AWS set a goal in 2019 to match its global electricity consumption with 100% renewable energy by 2030. The company, recognised as the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally last year, reached this goal in 2024, seven years ahead of schedule. AWS plans to invest over $12 billion in cloud infrastructure in India by 2030 to cater to the increasing demand for cloud services.

Jeff Johnson, Managing Director, ASEAN, AWS, stated, “As the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, AWS continues to work towards our goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Our collaboration with Gentari, a Malaysian clean energy leader expanding its regional impact, brings us a step closer towards that.”

Gentari, launched in 2022 by Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas, focuses on clean energy solutions in renewable energy, hydrogen, and green mobility. In 2023, Gentari and AWS signed a collaboration agreement to pursue energy transition and technology initiatives, including fleet decarbonisation and the expansion of AWS cloud technology.

Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari, commented, “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions – vital for Asia and the world’s move towards a low-carbon future. Through projects like the Karur wind development, we are not just adding renewable capacity – we are addressing real energy needs where it matters most. Together with AWS, we are focused on delivering impact through action and enabling the broader energy ecosystem to transition.”
