Nasdaq, the technology and exchange giant in capital markets, has announced the establishment of the Nasdaq Carbon Academy. This free educational platform aims to furnish individuals with the necessary skills to blend carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits into businesses’ emissions mitigation strategies.

As the demand for carbon offset initiatives and associated credits is projected to grow substantially in the forthcoming years, companies are increasingly leveraging these credits to complement their absolute emissions reduction efforts or address emissions that are challenging to mitigate. Consequently, there is a need for businesses to develop expertise in the domain to comprehend the wide spectrum of carbon credit technologies, suppliers, and standards, as well as to evaluate products and assess the quality and reliability of projects. Nasdaq’s new academy offers a suite of complimentary, self-directed courses, expert perspectives, and practical case studies. These resources are tailored to provide users with the knowledge and tools to integrate carbon removal into emissions and carbon management strategies. Suitable for business leaders, the academy also targets environmental professionals aspiring to expand their knowledge of carbon removal credits and investors keen on understanding the intricacies of carbon markets.

Fredrik Ekström, Head of European Product Strategy and Management at Nasdaq and Chairman of Puro.earth, stated:

“With the launch of this platform, we aim to enhance awareness and education surrounding carbon markets. Nasdaq Carbon Academy provides comprehensive information, from basic to advanced levels, in an accessible and user-friendly format.”

The academy debuts with five courses, including an Introduction to Carbon Dioxide Removal, covering the basics of CDR; Carbon Dioxide Removal Concepts, which discusses carbon market nuances and the assessment of high-quality carbon credit criteria and main market players; Carbon Dioxide Removal Methodologies, detailing various methodologies and evaluating criteria such as permanence, co-benefits, and scalability; Quality, Value, and Aligning Incentives, addressing factors such as the fundamentals of Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) and price drivers in the voluntary carbon market; and Budgeting, Portfolios, and Contracting, exploring topics from budgeting considerations and general portfolio evaluation to contract types and risk assessments.

The Nasdaq Carbon Academy has been developed in partnership with the carbon removal-focused organisation AirMiners, drawing on AirMiners’ Buyers Academy pilot. [Learn more about AirMiners on their official website.]

Tito Jankowski, CEO of AirMiners, commented:

“We built this academy so sustainability leaders can go from curious to confident in carbon dioxide removal. I’m excited for the Carbon Academy to support the next wave of sustainability leaders and their teams to take action on their sustainability goals.”
