Private equity firm Ara Partners, which specialises in industrial decarbonisation, has secured over $800 million (£636 million) for the inaugural fund under its Ara Infrastructure platform, significantly surpassing its initial fundraising target of $500 million. The capital includes commitments to associated co-investment vehicles and will be deployed into mid-market infrastructure projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions across the industrial sector.

Ara’s infrastructure strategy—launched in 2022—is led by George Yong and Teresa O’Flynn, who serve as co-heads of the division. The firm positions its focus on what it terms the “overlooked middle” of the low-carbon infrastructure market. Rather than targeting large-scale renewables, Ara is directing investment towards smaller but crucial assets that require construction, redevelopment or repurposing to help move the industrial economy towards a lower carbon footprint.

In a statement highlighting the opportunity, O’Flynn said the fund allows Ara to pursue a “generational investment opportunity” in both Europe and North America, driven by rising demand for energy and industrial services, the decentralisation of energy systems, and a broader economic imperative to decarbonise. She noted that most capital in this sector has historically been concentrated in large-cap renewable projects, leaving a gap in middle-market solutions.

To date, Ara Infrastructure has completed three investments, with a fourth expected shortly. Its current portfolio comprises 12 operational assets distributed across North America and Europe. Among these investments is Lincoln Terminal, a US-based provider of energy terminal services; USD Clean Fuels, which develops logistics infrastructure for renewable fuels and feedstocks; and Natural World Products (NWP), an organics recycling company headquartered in Northern Ireland that converts food and garden waste into compost.

Natural World Products plays a key role in the UK and Ireland’s circular economy ambitions, aligning with broader environmental policies such as the UK’s Resources and Waste Strategy. Similarly, USD Clean Fuels operates at the heart of the emerging green fuels sector, which is receiving increasing attention following the US Inflation Reduction Act and similar European Union initiatives under the Green Deal Industrial Plan.

George Yong, co-head of the infrastructure business, noted that Ara’s approach is not merely financial. “Ara’s builder capabilities and DNA ideally position us to navigate the disjointed, yet opportunity-rich, world of middle-market sustainable infrastructure,” he said. “Companies in our target sectors seek more than just a capital provider; we believe our in-house operational capabilities make us a value-add partner of choice.”

Ara Partners was founded in 2017 and is known for its focus on investments that support the decarbonisation of the industrial economy. The firm operates across several verticals including industrial and manufacturing, chemicals, materials, and energy efficiency. Its infrastructure arm is a strategic extension of this mission, targeting scalable, real-economy solutions that are often overlooked by larger infrastructure funds.

According to a recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), industrial sectors are responsible for nearly 30% of global CO₂ emissions, underscoring the scale of the challenge and the opportunity for investors like Ara to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition.
