Sony aims to cut emissions by 25%

Sony Group Corporation has unveiled new medium-term environmental objectives, including plans to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 60% and group-wide Scope 3 value chain emissions by 25% by 2030. These targets are part of Sony’s ‘Green Management 2030’ (GM2030) plan, covering the fiscal years from 2026 to 2030. This initiative is a component of Sony’s broader “Road to Zero” strategy, which aspires to achieve a “zero environmental footprint” by 2050 across all product lifecycles and business activities.

Sony anticipates meeting most of its current climate-related targets for 2025 by the end of the 2024 fiscal year. In its 2025 Sustainability Report, the company disclosed that it has already exceeded its 2025 goals, reducing absolute GHG emissions from company sites by 5.3% and achieving a 40.1% renewable electricity rate, surpassing its 35% target.

Building on these achievements, GM2030 introduces new metrics reflecting insights gained and the current environmental context. A significant focus is on reducing overall GHG emissions across Scopes 1–3 by more than 25% within five years. Sony now aims for net zero across its value chain by fiscal 2040, ten years ahead of its initial schedule.

Under GM2030, Sony commits to cutting direct emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 60% from 2025 levels and reducing indirect supply chain emissions (Scope 3) by 25%. The company also aims to power all its operations with renewable electricity and encourages its suppliers to adopt similar practices.

Additionally, Sony is prioritising circular resource use by increasing recycled content in its products, enhancing overall recyclability, and limiting non-recyclable plastics to a maximum of 30% of product weight. Sony also plans to phase out plastic packaging for smaller products and remove it from its retail stores.

Sony has joined RE100, a global initiative promoting 100% renewable energy, and its net zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The company also endorses the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures.
