SP Energy Networks invests £1.4bn in grid upgrade

SP Energy Networks invests £1.4bn in Scotland’s energy infrastructure. The initiative is part of a £5.4bn programme boosting UK supply chains and green jobs, enhancing energy security and economic growth through strategic partnerships with predominantly UK-based suppliers.

SP Energy Networks, the UK distribution arm of Iberdrola, has announced a significant £1.4 billion investment to enhance onshore transmission infrastructure in central and southern Scotland. This initiative aligns with the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 mission and is the first phase of a broader £5.4 billion investment programme aimed at transforming the national grid to meet increasing demand and facilitate the transition to clean energy.

Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Networks, emphasised the strategic importance of these partnerships, stating they provide suppliers with the confidence to expand their operations, thereby fostering workforce growth and opening new offices across the UK. She highlighted the contracts’ potential to drive a cleaner, greener Britain while supporting the UK Government’s clean energy ambitions.

The contracts include projects for new and upgraded high-voltage substations, overhead line construction, and comprehensive design, engineering, construction, and electrical works. Notably, 17 of the 19 contracts were awarded to UK-based companies, ensuring a robust domestic supply chain and long-term economic benefits. These partnerships are initially set for five years, with an option to extend to ten, allowing suppliers to invest in workforce training, technology, and innovation.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP lauded the initiative at its announcement in Glasgow, describing it as a pivotal step in modernising the UK’s energy networks. He noted that these partnerships are crucial for achieving the UK’s clean power targets by 2030, as they will enhance energy security and bring skilled jobs to local communities.

A significant contract was awarded to Morgan Sindall Infrastructure for substation and overhead line work on the Denny to Wishaw Network Optimisation project. Peter Kirk, Managing Director for Energy at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, expressed pride in supporting the UK’s largest energy network upgrade in a generation, which will enhance resilience, boost capacity, and connect Scotland to renewable energy sources.

The announcement coincides with ScottishPower’s commitment to double its UK investment to £24 billion by 2028, with a focus on electricity networks, reinforcing its role in achieving national decarbonisation goals.

The cyber weak point is no longer where many executives think it is

The cyber weak point increasingly sits beyond the core stack. Fresh warnings on messaging app targeting, botnets built from neglected devices, and the resilience of threat actors after takedowns all point to the same problem: organisations still struggle more with behaviour, asset visibility, authentication, and third-party control than with encryption…
