Renewable fuels producer Neste has announced a fresh agreement with Amazon to supply 7,500 metric tonnes (2.5 million gallons, or 9.4 million litres) of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by the end of 2025. This will be utilised in Amazon Air’s cargo operations at San Francisco International Airport and Ontario International Airport in California.
Neste, headquartered in Finland, offers renewable and circular solutions for industries such as road transport, aviation, and polymers and chemicals. Among its products is Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which is manufactured from sustainably sourced renewable waste and residues, including used cooking oil and animal fat waste. This fuel is compatible with current aircraft engines and airport fuel systems. Additionally, Neste MY Renewable Diesel, made from renewable raw materials through a hydrogen treatment process, serves as a drop-in substitute for fossil diesel, significantly curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Neste, its sustainable aviation fuel can cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over the fuel’s life cycle compared to conventional jet fuels.
In the new arrangement, Neste’s SAF will be mixed with traditional jet fuel and provided to Amazon Air’s network at the two airports. The fuel will be delivered directly to San Francisco International Airport via present pipeline systems, while renewable diesel-powered trucks, operated by Neste’s partner Diesel Direct, will transport it from Los Angeles-based SAF terminal facilities to Ontario International Airport.
This agreement supports Amazon’s objective to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2040. Its aviation initiatives include procuring lower-carbon aviation fuels and employing SAF credits to lower airfreight emissions. Amazon is a founding member of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) and has contributed to the Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates (SAFc) Registry, which seeks to enhance transparency in SAF emissions reduction claims and expedite SAF implementation.
Carl Nyberg, Senior Vice President of Commercial, Renewable Products at Neste, remarked: “We are excited to provide SAF to Amazon Air at two major airports in California. This milestone sends a positive signal that SAF is available to airlines and cargo operators, like Amazon Air, at these airports. Our supply chain solution for these California gateways builds on our existing SAF supply capabilities on the West Coast in the U.S., and leverages our partnership with Diesel Direct to transport SAF by trucks running on renewable diesel. This demonstrates how renewable fuels can help our customers easily reduce greenhouse gas emissions across different transportation modes.”
