DHL inks emissions deal with Air France KLM

DHL Global Forwarding expands sustainability efforts with new AFKLMP deal. The agreement with Air France KLM Martinair Cargo focuses on emissions reduction rights to aid DHL’s air freight decarbonisation. It builds on a 2022 partnership, aiming to accelerate sustainable aviation fuel adoption and enhance digital verification.

DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight division of Deutsche Post DHL Group, has announced a new agreement with Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP) to enhance their efforts in reducing emissions. This collaboration focuses on utilising emissions reduction rights, supporting DHL’s commitment to decarbonising air freight and achieving its sustainability objectives.

This development follows an initial agreement in 2022, where DHL purchased 33 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from AFKLMP. Under the new terms, DHL has signed a work order for 35,000 metric tons of CO2e Well-to-Wheel emission reduction rights. The partnership aims to develop a long-term strategy to promote the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels and digital verification processes in the industry.

GertJan Roelands, Senior Vice President of Commercial at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, expressed pride in renewing the partnership, highlighting the importance of their shared ambition and collaboration on SAF. He emphasised that this agreement demonstrates mutual trust and an operational commitment to driving significant change across the air freight value chain.

DHL stated that this agreement is pivotal in its goal to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuels to 30 percent by 2030. The initiative is expected to facilitate measurable emission reductions and establish globally applicable market mechanisms.

Henk Venema, Executive Vice President of Global Air Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, remarked that the framework agreement exemplifies collaborative decarbonisation in air freight. He noted that Emission Reduction Rights offer predictability, scalability, and transparency, which are crucial for the impactful integration of sustainable aviation fuels in the market. Together with AFKLMP, DHL is laying a foundation that could serve as a model for the entire industry.

Digital growth depends on trust built on fragile foundations. Dan Bridges, Technical Director – International at Dropzone AI, argues that growth demands digital trust, but architectures were built for a more trusting era — leaving security operations struggling to keep pace with AI-driven threats and an always-on risk landscape.
