Meta secures solar energy for US centres

Meta partners with Enbridge for Texas solar energy project. Meta has entered a deal with Enbridge for a 600 MW solar facility in Texas, marking another step towards its 2030 net-zero emissions goal. The project, Clear Fork, is expected to be operational by summer 2027….

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has announced a new long-term agreement with Canadian energy firm Enbridge for the supply of renewable energy. Enbridge will provide Meta with the entire output from a 600 MW solar facility in Texas, which will be used to power the tech giant’s data centre operations.

The project, named Clear Fork, will be a utility-scale solar facility situated near San Antonio. Enbridge has confirmed reaching a final investment decision on the initiative, with the project cost estimated at approximately $900 million. Construction of the facility is underway, and it is expected to commence operations by the summer of 2027.

Matthew Akman, Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy and President of Power at Enbridge, stated, “Clear Fork demonstrates the growing demand for renewable power across North America from blue-chip companies who are involved in technology and data centre operations.”

Meta aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2030. The company met its goal to power its operations entirely with renewable energy in 2020 and plans to add 9.8 GW of renewable energy to local grids in the U.S. by the end of 2025.

This announcement is the latest in a series of substantial renewable energy acquisitions by Meta, including several recent agreements for clean energy in Texas.

Urvi Parekh, Head of Global Energy at Meta, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with Enbridge to bring new renewable energy to Texas and help support our operations with 100% clean energy.”
