Danieli invests in Rotherham solar energy system

Danieli UK is investing in renewable power at Rotherham headquarters. The engineering company plans 474 panels and battery storage, forecasting more than £1.5m in lifetime energy savings.

Steel industry engineering business Danieli UK is spending more than £160,000 on solar power and battery storage at its Rotherham headquarters, with the company forecasting energy savings exceeding £1.5m over the system’s economic operating life. Sheffield-based COOPS Renewables has been appointed to install 474 solar panels alongside storage equipment. The reported project cost is £160,500.

The 218kWp array is expected to produce around 174,000kWh of electricity annually and avoid an estimated 46 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The investment is intended to reduce grid electricity purchases at the Rotherham operation. The projected savings are a company forecast covering the system’s lifetime, not a realised reduction in costs or a guarantee about future electricity prices.

Danieli supplies engineering technologies and services to the steel sector. The Rotherham project concerns electricity used at the company’s own UK premises rather than changes to the energy requirements of steelmaking customers. It is a site-level investment with a defined installation scope and an expected return over several years.

The combination of generation and storage is significant to how the equipment will operate. Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, while batteries can hold some of the surplus for later use. That can increase the proportion of electricity a business consumes on site instead of exporting it when production exceeds immediate demand.

The commercial result depends on the timing of both electricity consumption and solar generation. Demand at an engineering office or facility can vary during the working week, while panel output changes with daylight, weather, and the seasons. Battery storage gives the operator another way to manage that difference, though the premises will continue to rely on the grid when local generation is insufficient.

COOPS Renewables is based in Sheffield and provides commercial solar installations and battery systems. Its appointment gives the project a regional supply relationship alongside the energy investment itself. The installation has a specified annual generation estimate, although the battery’s precise storage capacity has not been reported.

When evaluating an installation of this type, the capital cost has to be assessed against expected output, the price of electricity avoided, maintenance, equipment life, and the extent to which generated power can be used directly. A lifetime savings estimate can be materially different from annual cash savings, and the headline forecast should be interpreted on that basis.

For the Rotherham site, the more immediate effect will be the addition of a new source of on-site electricity and storage capacity. The financial value of those assets will emerge through the system’s operational performance and changing costs of purchased power.

The project places 474 solar panels within Danieli UK’s energy management arrangements and represents a capital commitment to reducing purchased electricity. Its reported £1.5m-plus savings estimate will be measured over the installation’s working life rather than at commissioning.
