QinetiQ and Australia’s CEA Technologies have signed a statement of intent covering advanced radar technology as the UK and Australia deepen defence-industry cooperation and seek more resilient supply chains.
The agreement, signed in Canberra, centres on Active Electronically Scanned Array technology. AESA radar systems can steer beams electronically rather than relying on the physical movement of an antenna and are widely used in modern surveillance, tracking, and air-defence applications.
Both governments are supporting the industrial cooperation, although no contract value, procurement commitment, or delivery timetable has been disclosed. The statement establishes a framework for further work rather than an equipment order in its own right.
Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard said: “Working in lockstep with Australia we can drive jobs and growth while reinforcing our collective security.”
The arrangement builds on the Australia-UK Ministerial Consultations agreement reached in June and sits within a much larger effort to deepen industrial links between the countries.
AUKUS has brought particular attention to the ability of the UK, Australia, and the US to share technology, build specialist engineering capacity, and develop supply chains capable of supporting defence programmes over several decades.
Radar cooperation is smaller in scale than the submarine programmes associated with AUKUS, but it reflects the same industrial logic. Advanced defence systems increasingly depend on partnerships that combine national technical strengths rather than requiring every country to build an entirely domestic supply base.
QinetiQ brings testing, evaluation, engineering, and defence-technology capabilities to the arrangement, while CEA Technologies has established AESA radar expertise in Australia. The practical commercial outcome will depend on which programmes subsequently adopt the technology and how responsibilities are divided between the participants.
Defence collaboration is subject to constraints that do not apply to ordinary commercial technology partnerships. Export controls, national-security requirements, intellectual property, interoperability, procurement policy, and classified information can all determine how quickly cooperation progresses from political agreement to contracted delivery.
The wider strategic pressure is also changing. Current conflicts have increased demand for air defence and for systems capable of identifying, tracking, and responding to more complex threats. That puts radar, sensors, communications, and command systems alongside munitions and platforms as areas where governments are seeking greater capacity.
Industrial resilience has become part of the procurement calculation. Governments are looking beyond the technical capability of individual products towards the availability of skilled staff, specialist components, manufacturing capacity, and trusted suppliers able to sustain equipment over long periods.
Closer UK-Australia alignment gives British defence businesses potential access to programmes beyond the domestic procurement cycle, while Australian suppliers gain a route into UK requirements. The value of that access will depend on whether common standards and procurement decisions result in specific contracts.
The Ministry of Defence said AUKUS activity is already supporting tens of thousands of jobs across the partner countries. More than 3,000 jobs have been created at key UK nuclear sites since July 2024, while SSN-AUKUS submarine construction is expected to create more than 7,000 across the UK supply chain.
Those figures relate to the wider partnership rather than the QinetiQ-CEA agreement, but they show the scale of industrial capacity governments are attempting to build around long-term defence cooperation.
Pollard’s wider visit to Australia and New Zealand also includes discussions around critical minerals, maritime capability, and industrial collaboration. Raw materials, specialist manufacturing, and technology transfer are increasingly being considered alongside conventional equipment procurement.
The radar statement should therefore be read as an enabling agreement rather than evidence of immediate revenue. Its next meaningful milestones will be specific projects, investment decisions, technology integration, or procurement awards flowing from the framework established in Canberra.
If those follow, the partnership could strengthen another link in the UK-Australia defence supply chain. Until then, the commercial significance remains in the opportunity created by the agreement rather than the value of business already secured.
