GOV.UK Chat opens through government app

GOV.UK Chat is expanding access to official digital support services. The AI assistant, available in the GOV.UK app, is designed to answer routine questions faster and ease pressure on helplines.

GOV.UK Chat is being made available through the GOV.UK app, giving users access to an AI-powered assistant designed to answer routine questions about government services. The tool draws directly from GOV.UK guidance and is intended to help people find information more quickly on issues such as first-home schemes, retirement benefits, and childcare entitlements.

The launch sits within the government’s wider digital transformation programme and arrives as demand on public support channels remains heavy. According to the press release, some government call centres handle around 100,000 calls a day, while research suggests up to half of callers’ questions could be answered by GOV.UK Chat. Moving those simpler enquiries into the app is intended to free frontline staff to deal with more complex cases.

That shift reflects a broader effort to make public information easier to navigate without taking users outside official channels. Rather than directing people across multiple pages or service lines, the assistant is designed to provide immediate responses from trusted guidance in one place.

Sachin Agrawal, Managing Director for Zoho UK, commented, “The introduction of an AI assistant on GOV.UK is a positive step toward making public services easier to navigate. As government and industry continue to adopt AI, the real opportunity lies not just in deploying new tools but in developing the skills, governance and organisational readiness needed to apply them responsibly at scale.”

He added, “Keeping data privacy at the centre of any AI strategy creates the right foundation to make informed decisions and adopt AI responsibly. AI literacy and strong data protection standards will be essential to ensure initiatives are credible and built for long-term impact.”

Sheila Flavell, CBE, COO of FDM Group, commented: “AI is increasingly being embedded in operations. However, a significant barrier to successful AI adoption is the shortage of specialist skills. In fact, our research highlights that over 32 percent of organisations cite this as a key challenge.”

The service is available through the GOV.UK app, with users able to access it by signing in via GOV.UK One Login and opting in. The app can be downloaded here.
