Global Talent visa route expands to businesses

Research-intensive companies can now support more Global Talent visa applicants. The expansion covers businesses in life sciences, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, creative industries, and emerging technologies.


More than 100 research-intensive UK companies can now support international scientists and engineers applying through the Global Talent visa route.

The expansion allows eligible commercial research organisations to host applicants using the endorsed-funder pathway, which had previously been centred on universities, academic institutions, and independent research bodies.

Approved companies include large employers such as AstraZeneca and Jaguar Land Rover, alongside smaller businesses working in quantum computing, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, plastics, clean energy, and the creative industries.

The Global Talent visa is designed for recognised or emerging leaders in research, academia, digital technology, and the arts. Its research routes include fast-track options connected with qualifying appointments, fellowships, and funded projects.

Under the expanded pathway, an eligible researcher working on an approved funded project can be supported by a commercial host organisation. The route also allows greater flexibility than many employer-sponsored visas because successful applicants are not permanently tied to one company.

Researchers can change roles, move between approved organisations, or establish spin-out businesses, subject to the conditions of their immigration status. That flexibility is intended to support collaboration and commercialisation in fields where projects and funding arrangements change quickly.

The endorsed-funder pathway has already supported more than 12,500 people from over 130 countries. Commercial research companies will now join universities and institutes in using it to recruit staff connected with recognised research funding.

Steve Brierley, chief executive and founder of quantum technology company Riverlane, said the visa offered “a fast, flexible route to bring the best people to the UK”.

The policy addresses a practical recruitment issue for high-growth technology and science businesses. Specialist roles in quantum computing, engineering biology, drug development, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing draw from a limited international pool.

Companies competing for those skills must consider salary, research facilities, funding, career progression, immigration processing, and the ability of candidates’ families to relocate. Delays or uncertainty can cause prospective recruits to accept positions in other countries.

The expanded route does not remove the need for companies to demonstrate that their work and funding meet the eligibility criteria. Nor does it replace broader workforce investment, apprenticeships, or domestic science and engineering education.

International recruitment and UK skills development serve different time horizons. Businesses may need experienced specialists immediately to lead projects, secure investment, or train teams, while education and training programmes take years to increase the domestic supply of qualified workers.

The policy is linked to the government’s industrial strategy, which identifies high-growth sectors including advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, clean energy, life sciences, and creative industries. Access to specialist talent is a common constraint across those areas.

The government has also simplified the fast-track academic appointments route and plans to broaden the Future Technology Research and Innovation scheme. That programme allows eligible companies working on critical technologies to host international researchers, scientists, interns, and technical specialists for placements of up to two years.

A separate £54m Global Talent Fund is being used to attract research group leaders in clean energy, life sciences, and advanced technologies. The wider programme forms part of an effort to make the immigration system more responsive to research and innovation.

Businesses have repeatedly argued that conventional sponsorship routes can be too rigid for project-based research, early-stage companies, and international collaboration. Commercial research work may be organised around grants, partnerships, and technical milestones rather than permanent roles within a conventional corporate structure.

The flexibility of the Global Talent route also creates retention questions. Because visa holders can change employer or establish a business, participating companies must compete on the quality of work, facilities, compensation, and career opportunities rather than relying on sponsorship ties.

That mobility can benefit the wider innovation economy by allowing expertise to circulate between established companies, universities, and start-ups. It can make workforce planning less predictable for individual employers, particularly in fields where demand for specialist skills is already intense.

The expansion gives approved businesses another recruitment mechanism, but its commercial value will depend on processing speed, international awareness, and the number of candidates whose funding and experience fit the pathway.

Companies outside the initial group can register interest in becoming approved research hosts. The route’s longer-term effect will be measured by whether it enables more high-value research to remain in the UK and helps science-led businesses expand without relocating critical work overseas.
