Employee experience programmes risk underperforming when technology decisions are made without enough input from the people expected to use the resulting systems, according to a poll from Designit.

The Wipro-owned experience innovation business said 58% of design and experience professionals polled identified overlooked employee input as the biggest blind spot in employee experience transformation.

A further 33% selected businesses prioritising technology over people. Combined, 91% chose one of those two people-related factors, compared with 8% who selected poor hybrid experience design and 1% who cited personalisation fatigue.

The findings should be treated as an indication of opinion among the professionals polled rather than as a representative measurement of businesses generally. The supplied research material does not state a sample size, respondent recruitment method, or detailed fieldwork methodology.

The underlying management issue extends beyond the poll itself: organisations can complete a technology deployment without achieving effective adoption.

Niklas Mortensen, chief design officer at Designit, said: “Organisations need to understand that deployment is not the same as adoption.”

Employee participation can expose operational details that are difficult to identify from process maps alone. Workarounds, informal decision points, customer exceptions, manual checking, and dependencies between teams often become visible only when technology is tested against day-to-day work.

That becomes more important as businesses deploy AI and automation. A system can successfully automate an individual task while creating additional checking, exception handling, training, or coordination elsewhere in a process.

Those secondary effects may be difficult to identify during procurement because they emerge when technology interacts with real working practices. Employees can provide evidence about where decisions are made, which processes break under pressure, and where apparently simple tasks depend on experience or judgement.

Mortensen said: “It is the employees who understand the realities of their work more than anyone, so their experiences and insights need to shape transformation from the beginning.”

Employee involvement does not mean transformation should be designed entirely around existing preferences. Organisations may still need to remove inefficient practices, standardise processes, and change roles in ways that create short-term disruption.

The management task is to distinguish resistance to necessary change from evidence that a proposed system does not fit the work it is intended to improve.

Earlier testing can also reduce implementation risk. If employees encounter a system only after it has been configured, expensive design decisions may already be difficult to reverse. Testing assumptions earlier can identify workflow problems before they become embedded across a larger deployment.

AI adds another layer because many systems generate outputs requiring human judgement rather than simply completing deterministic processes. Employees may need to review results, correct mistakes, escalate exceptions, or decide when human intervention should override an automated recommendation.

That changes job design rather than simply removing tasks. Productivity gains depend on whether those responsibilities have been incorporated into the operating model and whether accountability remains clear after the technology is introduced.

Employee experience therefore intersects with technology governance. Transformation teams need measures for adoption, usability, accuracy, rework, and workflow impact alongside conventional project metrics such as implementation dates and budget.

Technology investment is generally easier to quantify than behavioural change, which can give software, systems, and licences greater visibility in business cases than the work required to redesign roles and processes around them.

The poll does not demonstrate that 91% of businesses are failing at employee experience transformation. It shows that 91% of the professionals responding selected people-related factors from the choices presented as the most significant blind spots.

That narrower finding still captures an operational distinction that applies well beyond the survey. Successful deployment shows that a system has been installed. Commercial value depends on whether it improves the work people actually perform after implementation.
