Bryt Energy earns SKA Silver rating for sustainable Birmingham office

Bryt Energy’s new Birmingham office has earned SKA Silver certification. Located at Bruntwood SciTech’s Cornerblock, the workspace was designed with sustainability and employee wellbeing in mind — from recycled materials to energy-efficient systems — marking a key step in the company’s long-term environmental strategy.

Midlands-based renewable electricity supplier Bryt Energy has achieved a SKA Silver rating for the sustainable fit-out of its new headquarters in Birmingham. The certification recognises the company’s low-impact approach to office design, carried out in partnership with interior design and fit-out specialist Claremont.

Developed by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), SKA rating is a recognised benchmark for measuring sustainability in office projects. It evaluates areas such as energy use, materials, waste, water, transport, and employee wellbeing — encouraging organisations to integrate environmental standards at every stage of design and construction.

Bryt Energy’s new office, located in Bruntwood SciTech’s Cornerblock in Birmingham city centre, was designed to support the company’s wider sustainability goals. “We’re pleased to see Bryt Energy’s efforts in embedding environmental sustainability into so many aspects of their new office,” said Elina Grigoriou, Chair of the SKArating Board. “Since first launching our assessment method in 2009, it’s been inspiring to see the number of organisations that prioritise sustainability when designing their workplaces, and we’re happy to have Bryt Energy join thousands of these like-minded organisations.”

To achieve the Silver standard, Bryt Energy adopted measures including the reuse of existing materials wherever possible and the sourcing of new materials with traceable supply chains. The company ensured that 90% of construction waste was diverted from landfill, while energy-efficient lighting and control systems were installed to reduce power consumption.

Patrick Ames, Client Director at Claremont, said that sustainability has become central to clients’ design briefs. “Sustainability is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s becoming a core driver in the design and fit-out briefs we’re seeing, especially from value-led businesses that know the importance of action when it comes to environmental responsibility and carbon reduction,” he said. “From day one, Bryt Energy has brought a real energy and commitment to doing things differently, and we made sure that passion for sustainability was embedded in every part of the design — not just in materials, but also in the way the office supports their team.”

Beyond environmental performance, employee wellbeing was a key focus in the office’s development. The workspace includes dimmable meeting room lighting, a dedicated wellbeing room, and flexible spaces designed to promote collaboration and accessibility.

Heidi Wilbor, Customer Operations & HR Director at Bryt Energy, said the project represents both an environmental and cultural investment. “We are proud to have an office that prioritises both sustainability and employee wellbeing, ensuring that our growing team has all that they need to thrive,” she said. “Our SKA Silver rating reflects the care that was put into crafting our office with sustainability in mind, at every level, and we will continue to seek ways to develop our new home even further.”

Bryt Energy’s achievement underlines a growing shift among UK businesses towards sustainable workplace design — balancing environmental performance with employee experience as companies redefine what modern office environments should deliver.
