£13m satellite fund targets UK connectivity gaps

UK satellite funding is targeting persistent connectivity gaps across industries. Sixteen projects will share £13m for rail broadband, agricultural sensors, optical communications, ground infrastructure, and other next-generation satellite technologies.


The UK Space Agency is investing £13m across 16 satellite communications projects intended to improve connectivity, develop new commercial technology, and strengthen domestic capability across an increasingly strategic part of the space economy.

The funded projects range from broadband trials on remote Scottish rail routes to precision-agriculture sensors, optical data links, portable satellite ground stations, and communications equipment designed for future lunar and deep-space missions.

One of the most directly commercial projects will see CGI trial satellite broadband on ScotRail’s West Highland Line through its SODOR programme. The route passes through areas where conventional mobile coverage is difficult to provide consistently, making it a practical test of satellite connectivity in transport environments.

The project also sits within wider government work to extend satellite connectivity across mainland rail services where terrestrial networks cannot provide reliable coverage.

In agriculture, Farmer Charlie’s GAUFF project is developing lower-cost satellite-connected sensors designed to provide real-time information on land and crops. The technology is intended to help growers make more targeted decisions around inputs, reduce waste, and improve productivity, with commercial availability expected by the end of next summer.

Betty Bonnardel, chief executive of Farmer Charlie, said the combination of affordable sensors and satellite connectivity could make it easier for growers to “make informed decisions, improve productivity and farm more sustainably”.

The largest individual awards also point towards rising demand for faster movement of data in orbit. London-based Exobotics has been awarded £2.1m for its STARS project, which is developing a planned satellite data-relay network using optical communications.

Archangel Lightworks in Oxford will receive £1.845m for Project Optimus, a laser communications system designed to transfer data between satellites and ground infrastructure at speeds above 100 gigabits per second. Orbital Astronautics has secured £1.71m to develop a portable ground station able to connect with multiple satellites and handle services ranging from low-bandwidth sensor traffic to broadband.

Airbus Defence and Space UK has also received £1.5m for work on a software-defined payload processor that can be adapted and reprogrammed after launch, increasing the flexibility of satellite missions.

The projects will be delivered through the European Space Agency’s Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems programme using UK Government funding.

The commercial relevance extends beyond the space industry. Satellite communications are increasingly being considered as part of a wider connectivity mix for transport, logistics, agriculture, defence, emergency services, energy infrastructure, and remote industrial sites.

Terrestrial fibre and mobile networks remain the principal infrastructure for most business connectivity, but their economics become more difficult in sparsely populated or geographically challenging locations. Extending fibre to every remote asset can be expensive, while mobile coverage depends on network density, power, and suitable sites.

Satellite systems can fill some of those gaps without requiring the same fixed local infrastructure. Low-Earth-orbit networks have also reduced latency compared with older satellite broadband systems, widening the range of applications that can operate effectively over space-based connections.

The next stage of the market is increasingly focused on integrating those networks rather than treating satellite communications as a separate service. Devices and business systems may switch between fibre, mobile, and satellite connections depending on location, coverage, resilience, and cost.

That creates opportunities for UK suppliers across antennas, optical communications, processors, software, systems integration, and specialist engineering. The government puts employment across the UK space sector at more than 55,000 people and its annual economic contribution at £18.6bn.

Security is another factor behind the investment. Communications infrastructure has become strategically important as organisations rely more heavily on distributed data, cloud systems, connected assets, and remote operations. Multiple connectivity routes can reduce dependence on a single network, although satellite systems create their own cybersecurity, capacity, and resilience requirements.

The strongest near-term commercial case is likely to be in locations where unreliable connectivity already creates a measurable operating cost. That can include delayed data from remote infrastructure, weak passenger connectivity, limited access to digital agricultural tools, or expensive temporary networks at isolated sites.

The diversity of the 16 awards reflects that broader shift. The programme is not centred on one large satellite constellation or launch project, but on the enabling technologies and practical applications that determine whether space infrastructure becomes useful at ground level.

The ScotRail and farming trials provide particularly visible tests. Reliable performance at acceptable cost would give the underlying technologies potential applications well beyond their initial deployment environments.

The £13m fund is modest compared with the capital required for major satellite networks, but it is targeted at technologies addressing specific bottlenecks. Commercial progress will ultimately depend on whether the funded systems develop into repeatable products, procurement programmes, and exportable services.
