WP Engine has opened its Smart Search AI product to websites across the WordPress ecosystem, ending the requirement for organisations to use the company’s managed hosting service before deploying the technology.
The standalone product uses semantic search to interpret the meaning and context of queries rather than relying solely on exact keywords. WP Engine is targeting organisations with large or complex content estates where traditional site search can struggle with long questions, spelling errors, or ambiguous terms.
Smart Search AI was previously restricted to WP Engine customers. Making it available more widely separates the search product from the company’s managed infrastructure and expands its potential market to WordPress websites hosted by other providers.
Ramadass Prabhakar, chief technology officer at WP Engine, said: “Search is one of the most overlooked parts of the digital experience, yet it has a big impact on how people engage with content on a site.”
The service automatically indexes new and updated content using dedicated external infrastructure. WP Engine says that arrangement prevents search processing from creating a performance burden for the underlying website.
It provides out-of-the-box compatibility with Advanced Custom Fields and WooCommerce and can be connected to headless WordPress environments through WPGraphQL and REST APIs.
The plugin also includes access to the Smart Search AI MCP Server, currently in open beta. Model Context Protocol is being adopted across parts of the technology sector as a standardised method for allowing AI systems to interact with external tools and information sources.
WP Engine’s implementation is designed to let organisations expose live site content to external AI agents in real time under controlled access. That expands the proposition beyond improving the conventional search box towards making a WordPress content estate accessible to agent-based services.
The distinction is becoming increasingly relevant as online discovery changes. Search engines, generative AI tools, ecommerce recommendations, enterprise assistants, and internal site search increasingly draw on overlapping pools of organisational information.
For website owners, that creates pressure to structure content so it can be retrieved effectively by both people and machines. Content may exist on a website but still fail to create value if users or automated systems cannot locate the relevant material quickly.
WP Engine says visitors who use on-site search demonstrate greater intent than passive browsers. For ecommerce, publishing, professional services, and complex corporate websites, an unsuccessful search can interrupt a high-value customer journey even where the required product or information is already available.
Mitie website manager Melanie Clarke said the facilities-management group had identified poor content discovery as an issue during a redesign. She said: “Smart Search AI has greatly improved customer-led user journeys across our site, so our content can create more engagement, not more frustration.”
The broader release also illustrates how competition among hosting companies is extending above core infrastructure. Providers increasingly sell security, performance, workflow, ecommerce, developer tooling, and AI services alongside server capacity.
Those products can deepen relationships with hosting customers, but they can also develop into independent software businesses if they are made available across competing infrastructure environments. Opening Smart Search AI to the wider WordPress market puts WP Engine into more direct competition with specialist search providers and other plugins.
Enterprise customers will assess more than search relevance. Implementation complexity, performance, data governance, integration with existing tools, cost, and control over indexed information will all influence adoption.
The MCP capability adds another governance consideration because external AI agents may need access to live organisational content. Businesses will need clear controls over which material is available, how permissions are applied, and what third-party systems can do with retrieved information.
Smart Search AI is available immediately for WordPress sites irrespective of hosting provider. Its wider release will test whether AI-powered website search can become a substantial standalone software category or is absorbed into broader digital-experience platforms as a standard capability.
