Barnsley launches AI jobs and training pilot

Barnsley is testing practical AI training linked directly to employment. Two new programmes combine paid placements, learning linked to Level 4, and job search support as the town develops its role as a national technology skills test bed.


Barnsley is launching two practical AI training programmes linking digital skills with employment, including a scheme worth more than £400,000 that combines six months of study with paid workplace placements.

The AI Career Launchpad, developed with Barnsley College, will provide training linked to a Level 4 apprenticeship and place learners with local employers. The programme is intended to give people practical experience alongside technical learning rather than relying solely on classroom based training.

Potential roles include helping organisations use AI tools, supporting data and digital systems, improving customer services, and identifying opportunities to use technology more effectively in day-to-day work. Local employers taking part will receive access to trainees through placements funded by government.

A second scheme, Getting Job Ready with AI, will begin supporting jobseekers from September. Participants referred through Jobcentre Plus will receive guidance on using AI and digital tools to search for suitable vacancies, tailor CVs and covering letters, prepare for interviews, and understand how technology is already being used in workplaces.

David Akeroyd, principal and chief executive of Barnsley College, said: “The AI Career Launchpad opens up careers that have, until now, been concentrated elsewhere.”

The programmes form part of Barnsley’s wider role as a Tech Town initiative backed by government, where local organisations are testing how AI adoption can affect employment, businesses, public services, and skills. The initiative is intended to provide evidence about practical adoption outside the UK’s established technology clusters.

The Career Launchpad addresses a common barrier to AI use among smaller organisations: a shortage of employees able to identify where the technology is useful and introduce it responsibly. Many businesses do not need to build their own artificial intelligence systems, but they increasingly need staff who can select tools, redesign processes, manage data, and assess whether automation produces a measurable improvement.

Paid placements give the training a direct operational element. Learners will encounter existing systems, customer requirements, data constraints, and management processes rather than working only with theoretical examples. Employers, meanwhile, gain access to people developing AI skills without bearing the full cost of the placement.

The arrangement may also reveal where technology offers little value. Effective adoption depends on identifying tasks where automation improves speed, quality, or cost without creating disproportionate risks around accuracy, security, privacy, or oversight.

Barnsley College has emphasised practical judgement alongside technical skills. That becomes increasingly important as organisations introduce generative AI into activities involving customer communication, internal information, data analysis, and administrative decision-making.

The local programme has a potential route beyond Barnsley. Once the Career Launchpad has been completed, its curriculum is expected to be made freely available so colleges and training providers elsewhere can adopt the model.

That makes the initiative relevant to the broader challenge of expanding AI skills outside businesses that already employ specialist technology teams. National ambitions for AI adoption depend on workers in manufacturing, professional services, retail, public services, and smaller enterprises becoming capable of using the technology productively.

Skills provision also needs to keep pace with rapid changes in software. Training designed around a single application can become outdated quickly, whereas transferable capabilities around data, workflow design, evaluation, and responsible use remain relevant as specific tools change.

The Getting Job Ready pilot tests a different part of the labour market. Jobseekers are already encountering AI in recruitment through application tools, screening systems, and employer workflows. Teaching people to use the technology during their own job search could improve access, although participants will still need to demonstrate genuine skills and experience during recruitment.

Barnsley’s two programmes therefore provide separate tests of the same underlying question: whether practical AI capability can translate into better employment outcomes and more productive organisations. The results will be most useful if they show not simply how many people complete training, but whether participants obtain work and employers achieve sustained improvements from the skills they acquire.
